Peter MacKay #SleptThroughHistoryClass

Peter MacKay slept through history class. He must have. His information about the French and the War of 1812 is shameful and for being the National Minister of Defense it is utterly nexcusable.

Last week during a speech at the French Embassy in Ottawa, the Defence Minister suggested the French supported the British during the War of 1812.

MacKay’s office is denying any effors and noted the role some French played fighting for the British – these of course being citizens of the Lower Canada colony and not France.

Compare that to MacLean’s journalist Michel Petrou put forth as a forthcoming excuse that MacKay could use after Petrou saw the speech.

It will take some creative spinning to argue MacKay had a clue what he was talking about. French Canadians fought hard and well against the American invasion of Canada, notably at the Battle of the Chateauguay, a decisive Canadian and British victory. But these men were generations removed from France and showed it little loyalty. The biggest effect France had on their lives was that when Napoleon took on Britain, America felt emboldened to go to war against them.

In truth France was a backer of the US during the time Napoleonic wars as they sought to divide the powerful British Navy on two fronts. This contributed to the decision of the US to start the invasion, though not the only reason.

Stupid. Utterly stupid mistakes and more important the denial of such don’t hold water in today’s fast world of social media connections. Twitter was quick to disseminate this info. Look at #mackayhistory for the latest posts.

Honestly how does a politician get to be so horrid at handling something like this in 2012? For more on this see the links at the bottom of this post.

Rampant tweets about the serious gaffe by Minister of Defense Peter MacKay.

 Some of the funnier ones:

  • In 1814, the French pushed the invading Americans back across the border between B.C. and California. #MacKayHistory
  • 1812: Bill Barilko disappeared that summer. He was on a fishing trip. #MacKayHistory
  • The War of 1812 may have had a different outcome if it weren’t for the Canadian made skidoo. Thank you Joseph Bombardier #mackayhistory
  • The War of 1812 was won after Canada stole cloaking technology from the Romulans. #MacKayHistory
