Pirates and the Social Realm

Every September 19th, our inner pirate is able to come alive thanks to the designation of that day being International Talk Like a Pirate Day. That day is coming soon and I thought a bit about the origins of this and the spread of what was an anecdote to an international event.

…the day is the only holiday to come into being as a result of a sports injury. He has stated that during a racquetball game between Summers and Baur, one of them reacted to the pain with an outburst of “Aaarrr!”, and the idea was born. That game took place on June 6, 1995, but out of respect for the observance of D-Day, they chose Summers’ ex-wife’s birthday, as it would be easy for him to remember. – Wikipedia

I believe that only with through social media was the leap from an idea to a website able to spread beyond those actually looking for this sort of thing. I mean who really searches for a pirate holiday? And if there was no social media, most likely the more popular returns would have been about Disney or Somolia.

My point is that you never know when a quirky idea – website support or not – will be championed by your social media connections and then taken up by others. Such is the power of connectedness. That is what social media is all about. Being connected.

So excuse me now as I go to find my eye patch and tell all of my Facebook friends who do not know about this great day so that more will be – arr talkeen lykes a pyrayte ye lad.
