Please Don’t Add Me

Being added to groups without permission takes up my time as I have to clean and maintain the groups I belong to. Most of the time they are of no interest. Unlike a Page, I am not invited, I am added.

Facebook continues to allow one to add you to a group without your permission. Worse, you will not know about it unless you have notifications turned on. To me it comes down to simple etiquette. A group is not like an event. I do not mind being invited to events, but of course I am not automatically tagged as being going to the event. The same should be with groups. Add me to a group invite, but it should be me that makes the decision to opt in. It should not be an opt out format.

Make sure you have your notifications on. Go to account settings and turn on all notifications. Choose to have notifications sent to you through Facebook (as the example shows) or through an email you have registered with.

Law in Canada does not permit opt out for marketing campaigns which utilizes your email that you submitted to an organization (unless political) so the same should apply within the walls of Facebook. Perhaps it is time to make some pressure happen to clarify this action within the law as Facebook seems only to change it’s ways when legislation is enforced.

May sure that you leave notification on when leaving a group. This will ensure that you are notified when automatically added to a group.

Yeah, also not keen on people/”friends” being able to “add” me without my confirmation. So, does that mean they can see my timeline/new feed, but if I don’t add them, I can’t see theirs? I think I’m going to go re-check my privacy settings now.

Only your friends can add you to a group. I should have clarified that. So if you are not my friend on Facebook, then I cannot add you. As for checking your settings, that is something we all should do from time to time.

The next post is timely as it is about proposed changes to privacy from Facebook.
