Twitter is usually seen as the country cousin to more popular Facebook and other social platforms, but with the integration of hashtags in popular culture – most notably news and current affairs programs, it is becoming not only a news spreader, but a news maker with many stories breaking on the platform. Arab Spring anyone?
Some of the interesting numbers here is the penetration and adoption of twitter in Japan and Brazil showing it to be a true global network, not just a western English platform. With over a million accounts added every day, twitter will have to start ramping up the qualifications to advertisers if they want to meet those target numbers in 2014 as the actual amount of twitter accounts that are left for dead is not released.
Twitter had this to say about it’s sixth anniversary:
Now it seems that there are as many ways to express yourself in 140 characters as there are people doing it. And at last check, there are more than 140 million active users (there’s that number again) — and today we see 340 million Tweets a day. That’s more than 1 billion every 3 days. However concisely, it turns out there’s plenty to say.
